Activities (times are approximate
and will vary day to day)
Homework Tutoring and Assistance (1 Hour) – Salem CyberSpace will be
open for the CyberYouth Program only. The room will be quiet for
everyone to work on their homework. Private areas will be set aside
for youth needing assistance so as not to disturb the other
children. At this time computers can only be used for homework
assignments.
Digital Arts Projects –
using project-based learning, every child will have individual and
team project to work on (other tech projects can be accommodated
based on the youth’s interests). Projects will be recommended in
music, graphic design, web design, photography, movie-making,
software game development, building a PC, etc.
Career Workshops
– we will talk to the youth about careers in technology. We will
visit with professionals who make a living in the Digital Arts
fields as well as other technology fields. We will discuss college,
career planning, and other topics to get kids planning thoughtfully
to high school and beyond. For the older kids, internships and job
shadowing opportunities will be available in the Spring.
Free Time – This may
include free time on computers, field trips, or other non-computer
related activities. (only if homework is
complete and arts projects are complete)
Afternoon snacks will be served.
Commitment
We recognize that children have other appointments and activities
after-school. However, both parents/guardians and the children
themselves must commit to coming at least 6 hours per week (out of a
total of 10 hours). This will be averaged over a month. Sick time,
travel time, etc. will not be counted against the children.
We need this commitment for two reasons: (1) we
have a waiting list for the program and (2) project-based learning is
more effective with consistent attendance so learned skills are not
forgotten but instead are strengthened week-to-week.
Eligibility?
Returning youth will be given first priority for
this program.
This program has been designed and funded for the
children from the underserved neighborhoods of Salem. If space is
available tuition paying students or non-Salem residents will be
considered.
Cost?
This Program is completely free for children who
qualify fro free or reduced lunch at school.
